[Image] TEKTRAN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IDENTIFICATION AND ROLEX OF NON-PATHOGENIC MICROFLORA ASSOCIATED WITH HONEY BEES Author(s): GILLIAM MARTHA A Interpretive Summary: This invitational review summarizes research results on bacteria, molds, and yeasts associated with healthy bees and their food. Over 6,000 microbial strains have been isolated and identified from these sources by the author. Microorganisms contribute intestinal biochemicals to honey bees, aid in the chemical conversion and preservation of pollen stored as bee bread in comb cells, and produce antimycotic substances that inhibit the fungus that causes chalkbrood disease in honey bees. A relationship has evolved with bees including honey bees, stingless bees, and solitary bees from tropical and temperate zones and spore-forming bacteria belonging to the genus Bacillus. Female bees inoculate food sources with these bacteria whose chemical products contribute to the elaboration and the protection from spoilage of food that is stored in the nest. This association is ancient based on results from stingless bees preserved in amber for 25 to 40 million years. Bees, their products, and their associated microorganisms are novel potential sources of bioactive products including antibiotics and should be included in industry screening programs in this era of increasing resistance of human pathogens to available antimicrobial compounds. Oggetto: aol-mondoapi: Frequenza api
Da: "pzorzan@libero.it"pzorzan@
Grazie Paolo Zorzan

[Image] TEKTRAN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE USE OF A STEROL INHIBITOR TO CONTROL THE GREATER WAX MOTH GALLERIA MELLONELLA Author(s): FELDLAUFER MARK F KOCHANSKY JAN P SHIMANUKI HACHIRO Interpretive Summary: The greater wax moth is a serious pest of honey bee products that contain wax, like honeycomb. We have been able to protect honeycomb by treating it with a compound that inhibits a nutrient required by the wax moth, but does not affect honey bees. This product should be of interest to commercial and hobbyist beekeepers, State Apiary inspectors, individuals involved in extension, as well as growers that depend upon a supply of honey bees for pollination.
